The aim of the this kit is to encourage pupils to investigate biodiversity in their local environment. The kit is based around 3 survey packs produced by OPAL (Open Air Laboratories) which provide all the information and basic equipment needed to carry out biodiversity surveys in different habitats (hedge, pond, garden and built environment). The results can then be entered on the OPAL national database. In addition to the resources provided in these packs, the kit also contains a large amount of additional equipment to enable pupils to extend their investigations of biodiversity. The Teachers Notes provide suggestions for using these additional kit resources.
Each OPAL pack contains a laminated leaflet with details of the activities to be carried out, a booklet containing more information and recording sheets and appropriate species identification guides.
The additional sampling, collecting and measuring equipment provided should enable pupils to find and study a wide range of organisms from both aquatic and terrestrial habitats and make accurate measurements of environmental factors such as temperature, light intensity and pH. They can then be encouraged to think about the conditions that individual organisms need to live and how changes to these conditions, as a result of human activity, may affect the biodiveristy of the habitat.
