Resumes of previous Master Classes
Are for teachers who would like to bring themselves up to date in particular scientific fields. Although Master Classes are designed for high-school teachers of science, teachers of other subjects, or at other schools who have a very keen interest in the topic, may also apply.
TSN Master Classes are not designed to supply classroom activities or curriculum packs that are necessarily suitable for children's use; they are to help update the teachers own science basewhich, in turn, should enable them to develop appropriate classroom materials.
They are offered to members in the first instance, on a first-come first-served basis. 2 weeks after the intial invitation to members, details are sent to all local schools.
They are whole-day sessions with the morning devoted to talks/discussions and the afternoon for related hands-on activity. They are available to small teams of teachers from the same school; we do not normally accept fewer than two teachers from each school. Science teachers who attend will normally be considered to have qualified in a science to first degree level, but others who are not science specialists, but with an interest in, or knowledge of, the topic may also apply.
Some topics may lend themselves to cross-curricular working and we support teachers from thesedifferent disciplines - our GIS Master Class in June 2007 was attended by geographers and scientists, whilst our Stem Cell event in 2008 included Religious Studies teachers who were particularly interested in the ethical dimension but recognised the need to understand the science that under-pinned this discussion.
There is no charge to schools other than a £15 registration fee which also covers the cost of administration and lunch. Furthermore, the TSN will make a contribution towards their supply cover costs for this event.
